JDS BUILDS IN ISTANBUL

Istanbul – We’re excited to reveal our first project in Istanbul!  After a selection process, developer Feryapi invited UN Studio (NL), Massimiliano Fuksas (IT) and Julien De Smedt Architects to compete for a new 100,000 m2 mix business campus in Kagithane, Istanbul.  JDS was awarded the contract in January 2013. Construction will start in June 2013.

The Premier Campus Office in Kagithane is a business district that focuses on the users working and living qualities and addresses its presence in Istanbul as a new form of contextual and urban approach: The building is formed by our desire to make it interact with its environment. It opens itself up to the neighbourhood and offers spaces to the users and the passers by such as plazas, intimate gardens and generous terraces.

The volume of the block is literally carved out to invite the surroundings in. The local hilly landscape, characteristic to Istanbul, is continued in the meandering of the volume both in plan, adapting to the site’s edges, and in section, weaving into itself in a series of gentle curving slopes, echoing the nearby Bosphorus waves. The vibrant commercial life of the ground floor burst out onto the plazas and the landscape. Upstairs the offices open out onto the green terraces, populated with lush vegetation, tempering the hot Springs and Summers. The volume reads clearly while still opening itself generously to the city from the far. As one gets closer the interiors become more discreet, protected by louvers that help shade from the sun.

The project acts as a catalyst of business life for a new Istanbul, that promotes contemporary culture, architecture and lifestyle. We’ve thought of a building where inside interacts with outside, where the plan is flexible to allow for anyone to find its desired space and place, whether it be a small one man show company or a large corporate office employing hundreds. We believe life is plural and various entities should coexist and exchange their experiences. The Premier Campus Office is where such a rich diversity can find its place.

American magazine Dwell came by Julien’s place for a chat on architecture and design. Story here.

Julien De Smedt’s new design capacity, MWA – Makers With Agendas, is portrayed in this month Blueprint Magazine issue (EN), featuring an array of forthcoming projects including Mike the bike, Flatable or Accordeon.

We particularity enjoyed writer’s Rakan Budeiri summary of MWA:
‘As to whether MWA’s acronym alludes to the Nineties’ hip-hop group, or the onomatopoeic sound of a kiss, that’s up to you to decide, but this promising product range from De Smedt and co shows both a humorous attitude and a responsible agenda.’

On MWA: MWA – Makers With Agendas is a new design capacity engaged in thinking, producing and distributing design. MWA is co-founded by Julien De Smedt and William Ravn.

JDS WINS TWO A+ AWARDS

NEW YORK – After winning last week’s MIPIM Residential award two of our prominent projects have just been awarded at the A+ Award set out by Architizer, New York City. The A+ Awards ambition is to profile itself as the Grammys of Architecture, bringing architectural concerns and interests to a broader audience.

“The mission of the Architizer A+ Awards is to remind everyone in the world that they are fans of architecture, even if they don’t realize it. This year’s winners make our job easy. They are projects where noble ambitions match their formal sophistication – they represent the best architecture from across the globe…” says Marc Kushner, CEO of Architizer The Awards will be given out at a red carpet ceremony in New York City in May 2013.

The prizes were appointed by an all-star jury of 200 personalities, among others, Olafur Eliasson, Steven Holl, Rem D Koolhaas, Ian Schrager, Ole Bouman, Iwan Baan and even Elle Macpherson. JDS will take home the Award for the best Sport venue for the Oslo Skijump and together with our collaborators, CEBRA, SeArch and Louis Paillard, the best Residential Award for the Iceberg.

JDS WINS TWO A+ AWARDS

In addition to the awards, Julien De Smedt’s new design capacity, MWA – Makers With Agendas, will go home with two special mentions in the categories of Architecture + Urban Transformation and of Architecture + Mobility for Mike, a new urban bicycle designed as an alternative to our society’s most prominent urban and environmental problem: the car.

On MWA:

MWA – Makers With Agendas is a new design capacity engaged in thinking, producing and distributing design. MWA is co-founded by Julien De Smedt and William Ravn.

MWA – Makers With Agendas addresses today’s world. Through observation, research and (a good amount of) curiosity we discover quirks, peculiarities and insights in unexpected places. We explore new typologies for a new society. All these strands of data are weaved together to lay the foundation for what we believe is nothing but essential in design. Our designs are simple, straightforward and unbiased.

THE ICEBERG WINS THE MIPIM 2013 AWARD

THE ICEBERG WINS THE 2013 MIPIM AWARD

CANNES – The residential apartment complex “The Iceberg” in Århus, Denmark designed by JDS Architects, Cebra, SeARCH and Louis Paillard wins the Mipim award for “Best Residential Project”. The award ceremony was held last Thursday, 14 March, in the main auditorium of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

The project provides an enormous opportunity for Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city, to develop in a socially sustainable way by renovating its old, out-of-use container terminal. The area is meant to become a living city quarter and achieve a proper level of urban density, comprised of a multitude of cultural and social activities, generous amounts of workplaces, and of course, a highly mixed and diverse array of housing types.

The Iceberg has been designed in a way that it allows natural lighting and waterfront views into as many apartments as possible. The resulting open and sculptural block closely resembles an iceberg.

This year the MIPIM Award did not only start with a new presentation technique, PechaKucha which allows delegates to view each project and then make an informed vote. The MIPIM Awards did also attract a record number of entries with 175 projects from 46 countries competing.
