JURA HOUSE NEARING COMPLETION

JURA HOUSE NEARING COMPLETION

The little house on the prairie is nearing completion in the Jura region, France. This modest private commission is Julien De Smedt’s first realised design for a family house.

The project was nearly cancelled for planning permit reasons when a an article came out in the local press calling the house the ‘skijump residence’. The journalist was referring to the fact that we had also designed the skijump in Oslo where Jason Lamy Chappuis, a skier from the village, had won the Gold Medal at the World Championship in 2011. Soon after we were called up to re-explain our design to the authorities which eventually granted it planning permit.

JDS DESIGNS FOR TV

8 October, 2012 at 14:03

Julien De Smedt has just delivered the design of a Museum to be featured in the new Danish TV series THE LEGACY to be broadcasted in 2014.

THE LEGACY is a character-driven drama series that examines what it means to be a family in a time when traditional patterns of family life have undergone radical change.

The series draws its inspiration from films and TV series such as THE ICE STORM, THE CELEBRATION and DOWNTON ABBEY.

The director of the series is the internationally acclaimed actor and director Pernilla August who has worked with directors such as Ingmar Bergman, George Lucas, Jan Troell and Bo Widerberg. In 1992 she won Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her part in Ingmar Bergman and Bille August’s film THE BEST INTENTIONS.

The series is a modern family portrait – a depiction of the ‘68 generation and their children. A tale of the marked traces that a time of violent upheaval has left on modern family life – whether this takes place against the background of a seemingly detached and progressive artist home, or in a more traditional, community-oriented, sports-centred rural environment.

THE LEGACY is set in and around the countryside mansion house, which has been the setting for the life and work of the internationally-renowned artist Veronika Grønnegaard.

The series traces the story of Veronika’s four adult children, whose distinctive upbringing has affected their lives in very different ways. They live scattered until Veronika dies, when they come together again to take stock of her legacy.

Shortly before her death, Veronika bequeaths the house to her daughter Signe, whom she gave up for adoption. Signe lives with her boyfriend in a quiet residential district in the local town, and has never learned the truth about her origins. This is to have fatal consequences.

What for the four siblings should have been a quick and painless division of Veronika’s estate marks the beginning of a journey into secrets and lies which turns their lives upside down and forces them to look at both themselves and each other with new eyes.
